Steve Jobs – Dead at 56

“Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me … Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me.”  [The Wall Street Journal, May 25, 1993]

Successful companies have visionaries, that’s why they are successful, but once in a lifetime does a person come along that inspires people the way that Steve Jobs did.  Love him or hate him he changed a generation and defined an industry.  He was a man with the innate ability to focus on the smallest of minutia and demand perfection.  His foresight into not only what was good for the industry now, but what would be good for it in the future was uncanny.  He embodies what other CEOs should strive for, and that’s emotion.  Steve Jobs truly cared about Apple…and on a larger scale the entire industry as a whole.  At the end of the day it wasn’t about the money, it wasn’t about Apple, it was about the people .  It was about delivering devices that enriched our lives and connected us.

Steve Jobs has been sick on and off for years so his passing, while shocking, was not all together unexpected.  He took Apple from a struggling computer company and transformed it into the most valuable traded company in the world.  I am glad that he was able to stay with us long enough to see Apple rise to the peak that it’s at.

So, Mr. Jobs, I, and everyone here at Tech Hype, salute you.  You have not only been an inspiration, but your leadership style and foresight aspire me in my own endeavors everyday.  You will be truly missed.

R.I.P.

Cloud Geek

As a new blogger/ tech fanatic/ gaming geek/ science nerd/ all around curious person who happens to want to get his much under appreciated opinion out to the masses of people who probably read a bazzilion tech blogs a week. I thought it might be nice to come at the tech blog from a different angle. Most bloggers come in the form of rumor monger or fact fanatic, while I will probably hit both of those marks on occasion (no one can resist a juicy rumor on the latest upcoming video game or gadget) I’ll try to come at it from what I call a “Cloud Geek” perspective.

“What is a “Cloud Geek”?” You might ask. Well its something that I just made up today, I was talking with one of my colleagues who if you read this blog would know, Brett Bazaar. We have similar opinions on many things but when it comes to how we make our points we take totally different routes. Brett is what I call “Laser Focused”, someone who takes a subject and focuses on that one subject without deviating from the source material. I.E. the new Apple release. I on the other hand take in smaller chunks of information from multiple sources that sometimes have nothing to do with the actual topic and use them to formulate a broader opinion on outcomes and implications of new technology, video games, company effect on the industry.

Take the new Apple news on the Iphone 4S. Like most I allowed the hype to affect my opinion on what would be released this Oct 4th and was much disappointed by the news of no Iphone 5. Well with speculation being what it is I made a prediction that Apples wasn’t going to do so well with the bloggosphere and investors. True to form Apple stock dropped 5% just after the announcement and only recovered 1% by the end of the trading day. Regardless of  the software and hardware upgrades the isheeple (or iherd/ general apple fanboy) went into  a boohoo fest which caused speculators to be a little skittish. That combined with the loss of Steve Jobs and the fact that Tim Cook was scheduled in a smaller venue on Apple property to do the key note combined to undermine the stock just a hair. Its my guess that Apple will be bouncing back by the end of the year and yes the 4S will be the best selling phone on the market but its that initial dip that seemed so obvious to me.

So here  is my initial foray into the Bloggosphere. Leave comments. Let the flaming begin.

The Nexus Factor

Yesterday after Apple’s totally mediocre and expected announcement I saw the first glimpse of what is, most likely, the new Nexus phone from Samsung.  If this sleek curved glass phone is, indeed, powered of Ice Cream Sandwiches then you may see a new market leader emerging.   Apple is doing what Apple does and you don’t become the most valuable company in the world by worrying about what other people are doing, but I think Samsung is headed in the right direction with their phone design.  I just question whether or not they can keep their ego TouchWiz UI out of the equation long enough to realize that they are better off without it.

Unpacked is being held on October 11th (video after the break) so we just have to wait until then.  Its a great time to be ready for a phone refreash…

LG, Sharp and Phillips working on a unified app platform for Smart TVs

LG announced that they have formed a partnership with Sharp and Phillips to produce an SDK for Smart TVs that will use a unified app platform.  The TV market is ripe for this kind of unification and this is a great way to get it done.  The platform will be HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV based and the beta will be launching in October.

If done properly and opened to the public to produce apps for it could become huge.  We could see the beginnings of the “cutting the cord” era that us tech bloggers love to chatter about all of the time.  Basically what we are talking about is a built in Roku that is universal across all platforms.  Publishers will dive at the chance to cut the evil overlords distributors out of the pictures and keep a larger part of the pie for themselves and  TV manufacturers would get a built in revenue stream when they sell a TV.

I feel like Google missed the boat by making Google TV way to web focus and overtly complex and the TV makers just decided to go at it alone.

And why shouldn’t they…

Will somebody buy RIM already?

I want to have faith, I really do, but I feel like RIM is asleep at the wheel.  With the iPhone 5 and the Nexus Prime (or whatever it will be called) on the horizon I can’t see how RIM can launch the new 9850 without a pit in its stomach.  This phone doesn’t even compete with last years models from Apple or Google.  RIM seems to be flying completely off of brand recognition and consumer loyalty as of late and Palm HP will tell you, that’s just no way to live.

If you are a die hard BB fan you can get this phone for $199 subsidized through Verizon online tomorrow or in stores on the 15th.
